What qualifications would I need to work in a jewelry store?

I am looking for a new job and I would very much like to work in a jewelry store. I've worked in retail for three years now at the same department store, and I'm enthusiastic when it comes to customer service. I love dressing up nice, so that isn't a problem. My favorite department to work in is jewelry. I don't know very much about jewelry, but at the store I work at now, we simply read the label to be able to tell if it is (MOP) mother of pearl, (SS) sterling silver, 14k, and so on. Will a jewelry store work the same way, or should I learn more about jewelry? I want to know if it is realistic before I prance in asking for an application.
