Tried to put my sim card into iphone 3; error message?

so i want to use this iphone 3 that my friend gave me w/o buying the data plan so can't i just put an old sim card in there (from an old shtty at&t samsung phone)? but. i kept getting a "could not activate cellular data network". what do i do? i wanna be able to use the internet wherever theres wifi
