How do I get him to open up more about his thoughts and feelings?

Im 17 and ive been with this lad for 3 years which i love to pieces! :-) i know he loves me, but he never seems to able to to say it to my face or say nice things or compliment me, how can I change this? I feel as though he doesn't care. What can I do?
